Kayak 101 Class

Summer is right around the corner and kayaking is a great way to enjoy Alabama’s beautiful outdoors! Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Montgomery Whitewater and the certified paddlesports instructors of ACA Alabama are teaming up to get you started!

10 am – 4 pm

As part of National Safe Boating Week, certified ACA Kayak instructors are offering a kayak safety class at Montgomery Whitewater.

If you are new to paddling, looking to learn more about water safety, or looking to make friends in the paddling community, this is the class for you.

Class registration is $15 | spots are limited

Montgomery Whitewater will provide a helmet, PFD, and paddle. Demo gear is also available upon request.

Class Details

- Trip planning, preparation, and prevention

- What equipment you should carry

- Boat and paddle anatomy

- Understanding bulkheads/floatation safety

- How to properly carry & transport your boat

- Basic posture for full body paddling and boat control

- Basic paddling strokes

- Proper entry and exit of your boat

- How to re-enter a kayak if you capsize in deep water (multiple methods for self and assisted rescue)

- How to empty a swamped boat

- How to tow a swimmer
- Camp chair

- Personal Life Jacket (Must be approved, and up to code.)

- Personal whitewater paddle

- Personal whitewater kayak

- Water bottle

- Sunscreen or hat

- Sunglasses

- Lunch and snacks

- Quick drying shirt and shorts

- A bathing suit, you will get soaked!

- Secured footwear. (no crocs)
